Joey's Altar

This is my altar for the artist Keith Haring. Keith was an artist who did his work mainly during the 1980's. His work focused a lot on major issues such as the AIDS epidemic, gay rights, and the partied occurring in Africa at the time. I chose lilies and orchids because they are flowers that one tends to be attracted to because of their beauty but at closer observation realizes how sexual they are. This is found in much of Keith Haring's work. At first glance it's bright, fun, and whimsical but at closer observation you learn about the underlying sexual connotation of the work. I put corn and chocolate, food that is assimilated with the African culture, in the altar in order to symbolize the work Keith did for Africa. Viola!

  1. Hi Joey,
I totally love Keith Haring too. He was a really important influence on me growing up as an artist. I have a KH watch that I wore to commemorate him for years until the band broke.

Glad to know his work continues to influence people...he is for sure smiling from heaven to be remembered!
