My Alter is for a close family friend who was a victim to gun violence, but also just to everyone lost due to poor gun control. I was working on another version of this piece in my research studio class, when the alter assignment was given, and also when I was told I would have to make a version of my original project for the boomerang space. The assignment for the boomerang space was to make a version of our original idea that could be shown in the boomerang space but also included a mirror. My piece while it is about Derrell Goins death, which was a tragedy, it is also about the affect his death had on the people who loved him. 3 months after Willo's death, his daughter Dakota was born, and she will never know her father. An amazing hard working young man. So my Alter is made up of a living room/kitchen table with a birthday cake for Dakota on the table. The wall paper is made up of photos of Willo but also photos of Dakota and Stephanie (Willo's widow). The way I chose to use the mirror is to reflect the viewer into the piece.

Iman,
ReplyDeleteThis is really a visually powerful installation. I am very sorry to hear that you lost a friend to gun violence. I am glad that your altar speaks to this urgent issue.......Did you put the class assignment in the exhibition or decide your piece in the show could be this assignment??
Remember the writing part of this assignment & please write more text about it!
