I wanted to draw a picture for this assignment because i like hands-on materials and enjoy drawing and painting. When i draw i usually use pencil or charcoal.
Lately i've been really into the idea of capturing things as they are. When i make self-portraits i don't necessarily want myself to look pretty. I want it to look like who i am and depict more of the 'real' me. I want it to be like how someone would see me when i'm just being me.
I really like eye contact that's why i'm looking right at you and this sounds weird but i tend to look down into the camera when i take a self-portrait. I don't think of it as me looking down on you (even though that's kind of what it is) it's more like you're super close to me and i'm letting you in because i think of myself as being shy and not very open until you get to know me. This particular drawing im kinda leaning back and looking at you with my head tilted slightly which gives it a sense of distance from the viewer but that's how i am.
I drew this with pencil and i felt like it didn't really express who i am at all. So i made some copies of it and messed around with them using colored pencil and then i tried using pastels.
I think my hair is crazy and i love drawing it because the ends are kinda wild (to me anyway) so i started putting purple pastel in my hair because my hair is dark and purple is a darker color (and purple happens to be my favorite color). I really liked where it was going so i started coloring my face and and this is what i came up with :)
