My Altar

My altar is very simple: an egg on a white pedestal that lays on top of a green pedestal. My altar is for all of the unborn in life. (I was born and raised Catholic, and we are taught that all life is sacred.) Since life at an early stage is very vulnerable and does not have the choice of life or death, I especially believe that all of the unborn deserve to be respected. The egg represents the unborn, the white pedestal the egg sits on represents heaven (because I believe that all unborn life is innocent and goes to heaven), and the green pedestal underneath represents the earth. I did not want to make my altar gruesome in any way (because death is certainly not pretty!) but I wanted to make a simple representation of my beliefs on the subject.
I am familiar with this subject because I have seen my own mother suffer through several miscarriages. When she was pregnant with my best friend, my sister Jenny, her doctor said that if she didn't have an abortion with her there would be a great chance she would lose her own life. But my mom did not care, she wanted to have Jenny even if it took her own life! Today they are both alive and well; for that I greatly respect my mom. Although I am pro-life, I know that no matter what, people will do whatever they want to do and have abortions; it is inevitable! With this altar I wanted to make a statement that each unborn child (and chicken, animal, and other forms of life) go to heaven to be with God.

  1. Kirsten,
Your altar is very beautiful in its simplicity, almost like a Brancusi sculpture. Its a lovely commemoration to your mother and Jenny, and the brave decision that she had to make to risk her life to bring your sister into the world.

The issue of abortion is a very complicated one between a woman, her conscience and her doctor, and it is never an easy decision, for anyone involved. We must work toward having better healthcare and childcare, to make it possible for more people to have the freedom to choose!!
